The McCune Foundation was established in 1990 by George D. McCune and Sara Miller McCune, the founders and principal management team (for 25 years) of SAGE Publications, Inc. Our mission is to be an agent of productive change in society by supporting the growth of social capital in communities.

The Foundation seeks to:
Strengthen the operating capacities of community organizations which build social capital
Support the growth of community networks that build collaborative approaches to sustain social change
Promote the application of usable knowledge gained through the disciplines of the Social Sciences and the experience of the McCune Foundation to the work of community organizations the Foundation supports
Share with others — community leaders, funders, public officials — the lessons gained from the practical experiences of these funding partnerships and encouraging the healthy exchange of ideas relevant to building healthier and more self-reliant communities

In addition to grants that directly support the mission and vision stated above, the Foundation also makes modest discretionary grants at the recommendation of its board members and committee members. Discretionary grants reflect the personal values of individual board and committee members and do not necessarily meet the funding guidelines for McCune Foundation grants. The Foundation also makes an annual contribution to the University of California, Santa Barbara, to fund the George D. McCune Dissertation Fellowship in Communications. This fellowship honors the Foundation’s co-founder George D. McCune.
