Funding Process and Guidelines

An Initial Inquiry is required of applicants. This should be a letter from the Chair or President of the board of directors describing the project to be funded and demonstrating that the proposal fits within the Foundation's funding guidelines. After reviewing the Initial Inquiry, the Foundation will advise the applicant of its interest in receiving a full proposal. At that time, a Grant Application Form will be made available with full instructions and submission deadlines. After a complete application is received and reviewed, a site visit may be scheduled.

The Initial Inquiry letter should contain the following information:
  Program or project title
Purpose and objectives of project for which funding is requested
What will change as a result of this project?
What are your plans for engaging the community in the process?
How will the activity respond to the needs of the community?
  Total cost of the project
Amount of grant money requested and what it will pay for
Brief background of the organization applying
Name and phone number of Executive Director or other contact for questions
What makes this a grassroots organization?
Where did the idea for your project come from?
Who is leading and/or making decisions about the project?

The letter should be limited to two pages or less of standard type and must be accompanied by a copy of the most recent IRS letter of tax-exempt status. Do not send any additional material.

The project must be fully designed and ready to begin if approved.

Send letters to:

Although awards are generally made for one year, we will consider requests for two-year grants and we are willing to fund operating expenses as well as new projects. We also will support technical assistance for grassroots organizations needing to respond to the challenges of growth.

Grants will not be awarded for direct services, direct support to individuals, budget deficits, religious organizations for religious purposes, construction or renovation of buildings, or general fund raising drives or events. We generally will not consider proposals from schools. In general, we do not fund projects implementing model programs from elsewhere, but will consider funding the expansion of locally-initiated projects to other parts of the region.
